MacDuff's Review

An intimate and elegant dining experience awaits you at this eight-table restaurant in an 1873 town house with red-clothed tables, upholstered Queen Anne chairs, and brass chandeliers and sconces. The menu leans French in preparation, but Continental in substance: the twin tenderloin fillets with port, Stilton cheese, and green-peppercorn sauce is the signature dish, or you might try veal scaloppine in a blackberry cream sauce. Desserts include lavender crème brûlée and homemade orange ice cream served in a bittersweet chocolate shell. The extensive wine and liquor selection includes 40 single-malt Scotches.

    Stay Away

We chose this restaurant for our Valentine's Day dinner based upon local recommendations. As others have noted the hostess was cold and surly. She managed to give you the impression that she was annoyed at having to deal with you. We had looked at their menu on line and were surprised when the menu we were given was a "Special Holiday" one which did not contain several items we were interested in. We selected a shrimp dish for an appetizer. The shrimp were very large but they were slightly undercooked and the special sauce with which they were served was inferior to a standard cocktail sauce. The bread presented was one small loaf and the salad was simply a small shallow dish of chopped lettuce with no additional ingredients or garnishes. For our entrees my wife choose a Fillet Mignon and picked a veal dish. The steak, ordered medium to medium-well, was served well done. When we were able to get grumpy's attention we told here of this. Her response was "So what is it you want me to do about it!! After recovering from her surly and insolent response we told her to replace it. I don't thing the replacement stake was a fillet as it was a bit larger, irregular shaped, and had been butterflied. It also had that powdery texture of having been tenderized. But the flavor was not bad and it was not overcooked the second time. When she brought it she had the audacity to lecture my wife on how to order steak and indicated that the first offering, which did not have even a trace of pink in it, was what she (incorrectly)considers to be medium. My veal was pretty good but not at all exceptional. The quality of the food and service here are poor at any price and certainly a poor value.
