Fodor's Review

At Atlantic and Bedford, the 23rd Regiment Armory is one of Brooklyn’s most imposing and important landmarks: an almost full-block Romanesque Revival building by architects Fowler & Hough that dates back to 1895 and, to this day, stands tall over Bed-Stuy and Crown Heights like a medieval, fairy-tale fortress. The building—much of it restored, from the crenelated towers to the arched windows—now serves as a homeless shelter, which means that the blocks around the landmark can feel a bit dodgy. During the day it’s safe, though, with plenty of people milling about—just be smart.
