Perhaps not as famous as its next-door neighbor, the New York City Opera draws a crowd to its performances at the New York State Theater. Founded in 1943, the company is known for its innovative and diverse repertory. Under the leadership of artistic director Paul Kellogg, City Opera stages rarely seen baroque operas such as Acis and Galatea and Rinaldo, adventurous new works such as Jack Beeson's Lizzie Borden, and beloved classics such as La Bohème, Carmen, and the like. Placido Domingo and Beverly Sills began their careers at City Opera; generations of great voices follow in their footsteps. City Opera performs September to November and March and April. All performances of foreign-language operas have supertitles -- line-by-line English translations -- displayed above the stage.
