Inspired by the colors and sleek lines of European moderne, this retro-glam property aspires to the sophisticated style of the 1920s and '30s. Guest rooms with 10-foot ceilings are adorned with antique-rose velveteen armchairs, sorbet-hue sheer curtains, and marble-topped desks. Deluxe rooms have French doors opening onto private balconies from which you can survey Park Avenue. For the ultimate in entertaining (or an exorbitant romantic getaway), reserve the spectacular penthouse suite with baby grand piano and rooftop garden. The civilized service here includes complimentary breakfast, coffee, and weekday evening champagne reception. The staff is exemplary. Pros: high-quality linens: rooftop terrace for guests; quiet hotel. Cons: street noise near lower levels; pricey for the quality you get.
