This W Hotel is the most geographically desirable of the brand's many Big Apple branches. It's also the most elegant, utilizing the grand spaces of the landmark Guardian Life building at Union Square's northeast corner. Both the interior and exterior of the 1911 Beaux-Arts-style building retain many original granite and limestone details, including the grand staircase that leads to the Great Room lobby. Rooms are traditional W spaces, including velvet armchairs, Bliss bathroom amenities, and leather headboards. Todd English's Olives anchors the ground floor with a fine, bustling restaurant. Generally, the service staff look as though they just stepped out of a photo shoot, and at times it feels like that's where they'd rather be. Pros: fashionable location and staff; great restaurant and exploring neighborhoods. Cons: trendy decor; noisy lobby; dim lighting.

I really adore this hotel. I have stayed here twice in 2009 and each stay was better than the last. The service was terrific and the rooms were awesome. The Wow Suite is groovy and comfortable. Toss in the Bliss products in the bath (there is also a Bliss Spa in the lobby) with the cool atmosphere and you have what has become my favorite hotel in my favorite city. (Sorry Paris.) The best part is that it's a cool place to stay, but the staff makes sure you'll want to return. Nothing aloof about this hotel. Can't wait to go back.
