The French hotel group's property is a dramatic, contemporary 30-story curved tower overlooking 5th Avenue. The place has international sophistication that manages to be unfussy, with a gracious lobby, an elegant French restaurant (Gaby, named for a Parisian model who made a name for herself in the Big Apple in the 1920s), and courteous staff, always on hand with a friendly "Bonjour." Guest rooms are European modern with blond-wood headboards, silver wall scones, and plush seating. Spacious bathrooms have separate stall showers and bathtubs. Room views vary; the best ones have balconies and overlook the Chrysler Building. Ask for a Sofitel "privilege card" and get a 4 PM checkout. Pros: central location; great beds. Cons: pricey; room views vary.

I had a great experience at the Sofitel during Memorial Day weekend. The rooms were clean and neat. It had a super location to walk to Times Square and Broadway and was close enough to subway stations for city travel. The doormen were fabulous in their personalities and assistance. Overall I thoroughly enjoyed my stay.
