Europeans and students know about the chipper, winning attitude of this friendly, no-frills hotel. For most rooms you have to be willing to share a bathroom (there are two unisex bathrooms per floor), and to carry your bags up a few flights of stairs. If you're fine with that, and don't mind rooms with minimal furnishings, then let the fun begin: every wall and ceiling in this bohemian dive is covered with a mural. Even individual rooms have a theme, such as the Versailles Room, with its outré symphony of trompe-l'oeil trellises and classical urns. The English Cottage room decorated in the Tudor style with vine-covered walls. Despite the great designs, rooms do not have TVs or phones. They do have consistent prices: $130 including tax for a private bath, $110 to share. Pros: rock-bottom prices; chipper attitude; quieter residential Murray Hill location. Cons: no elevator; few furnishings; many shared baths.
