No hotel in New York is as lighthearted as the Parker. Despite the Meridien marketing affiliation, this is the largest privately owned hotel in the city, which means the hotel freely uses a refreshingly wry approach: Tom & Jerry cartoons in the elevators, a $1,000 omelet on the breakfast menu at Norma's, and door privacy signs that read FUHGETTABOUDIT. At the same time, it's also quite sleek. The lobby's striking atrium combines cherry paneling, hand-painted columns, and contemporary art. Crisp, modern rooms include low platform beds, supercool rotating ceiling-to-floor entertainment units, Aeron chairs, and Central Park or skyline views (ask for the Park rooms). Gravity, a 15,000-square-foot health club with a glass-enclosed rooftop pool and spa services, is, by far, the best hotel gym facility in New York. Norma's serves the morning meal from 6:30 AM to 3 PM, with a famous brunch. The wonderful, discreetly hidden Burger Joint has—if you haven't heard—possibly the best burger in the city just beyond its velvet curtain. Pros: lively, animated spirit; best hotel gym in the city; fun eating options; tech-friendly rooms. Cons: lobby is a public space; building heat spotty in transitional seasons.
