Fodor's Review:

Step past the beaux arts facade of this 1905 gem and into the luxurious lobby with original art nouveau accents. Guest rooms, many with sweeping views down 5th Avenue, have a modern sensibility. The high-tech amenities are excellent, from a bedside console that controls the lighting, sound, and thermostat for the room to a TV mounted over the tub for bath-time viewing (in all but standard rooms). Thoughtful service extends to the complimentary selection of bottled waters in each room to same-day laundry service. The rooftop health club, indoor pool, and seasonal open-air bar -- which is something of a local hot spot -- all have dazzling views of Midtown.

very fancy, bring lots of cash

we booked this hotel because of the location, here is a list of pro's and cons: Pro's: 1. Location (for a family it's close to shops, restuarants ect...) 2. Service 3. Has a swimming pool for the young kids 4. Celeb sightings 5. Top notch rooms Cons: 1. The cost: $800/night plus tax is out of most people's budget. 2. Valet parking at almost $60 a day. 3. Cost of breakfast is out of this world, $50 a person. 4. Asked for a pot of coffee from room service and they said it would be like $31, so I went to Starbucks. 5. Too formal for family travel

Just wonderful

Posted by Liz from Boston, Mass on 10/23/06

All hotels have flaws, no matter what the cost is, but when we arrived here after our trip to Paris, we felt that the service was better than that of The Four Seasons George V , which is said to be possibly the best hotel in the world. We did however only book a Superior room which was the entry level category, but it was very nice compared to other NY hotel rooms I have stayed in. The room service is very costly, but at $725 a night, who cares?? LOL..

Ultra Luxurious Hotel

Posted by Robert from Hartford, CT on 10/23/06

Having stayed at The St Regis and The Pierre, I must say that The Peninsula is just as good, if not better. I booked a Deluxe King and was upgraded to a Grand Luxe at no charge, which is always nice. Staff was helpful, albit snobby, but that is to be expected at a hotel of this level. Everything is immaculate, rooms, the lobby, the jaw-dropping bathrooms, it does not come cheap, $800.00 a night plus the high city taxes.

Not a 5 Star Hotel

Posted by Libby from Boston, MA on 12/30/05

This hotel offers 5 star prices, and is a 4 star at best. I have stayed at the Essex House, Waldorf Towers, and The Pierre in New York all of which had far superior service and were about $200 a night less than this hotel. Check in was at 3pm, didn't get a room until 5:15pm, so I complained. They sent a bottle of wine up to the room, and gave me a $100 discount off my bill. The room smelled of smoke even though it was a non smoking floor. The bathroom was nice, but had some cracked marble and the shower did not have the best water pressure. All in all, it was an average luxury hotel, nothing spectacular, and not at all worth the high $825.00 a night room rate.
