New York City Restaurants

The Standard Grill

Updated 02/25/2014

Fodor's Review

Hotelier Andre Balasz created a scene for celebs, fashion-industry insiders, and the common folk, too, who all cluster at this buzzy restaurant inside the Standard Hotel. In warm weather the spacious outdoor seating area is perfect for sampling creative cocktails; there's an indoor bar, too, and two dining rooms—a casual one in front and a larger room in back, with a floor whimsically made up of thousands of glittering pennies. The menu is comfort-luxe, with dishes like

roast chicken for two in a cast-iron skillet and delicious moist trout with a currant-and-pine nut relish. For dessert, there's a nearly obscene chocolate mousse that comes with silicone spatulas in lieu of spoons. A late-night menu is offered until 4 am.

Don't come with special requests

I ordered a steak here and asked for a bernaise sauce or a zip sauce to go with. I was offered A-1 sauce or ketchup but the chef would not accommodate my request. I complained to the manager and was belatedly offered horseradish. The chef may have been in a bad mood because on a previous visit my request had been honored. There's lot's of attitude at this restaurant-- just be prepared to have your meal the way the chef likes it, not how you want it!
