The Casablanca remains one of New York's great hotel bargains. It's hard to believe you're a stone's throw from all the Times Square hoopla when you enter the lobby. Evocative of a locale straight out of its namesake film, a sultry Mediterranean feel permeates throughout the hotel, with mirrors and mosaics in public spaces ceiling fans, wooden blinds, and dainty little bistro tables. Huge tiled bathrooms, many with windows, feature Baroness Cali amenities. On the second floor, classical music plays while guests linger in the spacious library-like Rick's Café for the complimentary breakfast buffet and wine-and-cheese evenings. Pros: great access to the theater district; all rooms are smoke-free. Cons: exercise facilities at nearby New York Sports Club, not on premises; heavy tourist foot traffic.
