The landmark facade of this exquisite building has more pizzazz than the predictable guest rooms, with their requisite dark-wood reproduction furniture and chintz bedspreads. Health-conscious adults might like the gym on the top floor, with its city views, and children may be glued to the in-room Nintendo games. Service is the hotel's strong suit, and their popular Mediterranean restaurant Nice Matin is one of the better ones on the Upper West Side. The affluent residential neighborhood is filled with an impressive array of boutiques and gourmet food shops, and the American Museum of Natural History is a short walk away. Pros: free wireless; clean; close to Central Park. Cons: Inconsistent room size; some report uncomfortable pillows.

The Lucerne's rooms are big for NYC. We've stayed in the matchboxes (Mansfield) and the chains (Marriott TS) and the Lucerne beats them both in price and atmosphere. Right next to the subway and right off Amsterdam with all those great restaurants.
