The marble-lined lobby of this grande dame wows with fine, hand-loomed carpets, crystal chandeliers, and wall friezes from the Vanderbilt mansion. White-gloved attendants man the elevators. Many floors of the hotel are private residences, and all hotel rooms are privately owned and individually decorated but adhere to the rigid standards of the hotel. The utterly luxurious suites have separate living and dining areas, crystal chandeliers, and serving pantries, and many have decorative fireplaces, antiques, and glorious marble baths. The cramped and stupendously expensive Harry Cipriani's provides room service (a liter of water costs about $20). Continental breakfast is complimentary for guests, and at lunch it's the best people-watching in town.

Grand hotel on Central Park
Posted by jeffpsd from San Diego, CA on 12/8/06
The beauty of this hotel rivials that of any in midtown, including The Chrysler Building. It's location is the best, at the foot of Central Park. Much of the building is made up of residences, very exclusive. The lobby was modeled after the Vatican Library and features sculptured panels savaged from the old Vanderbilt mansion. Elevators are hand painted and are manned by attendants. We booked a suite; enormous, with elegant funishings, fireplace (non-working), large bedroom with a wonderful bed and linens, big closets, beautiful marble bath, 2 plasma tvs, a modern small kitchen tucked away, with ice maker and sodas and waters compimentary, along with a wonderful continental breakfast delivered each morning. Unbelievable. Plus the staff; all great; professional and friendly, so happy to accommodate your request (I asked about a cd player, one was brought up 10 minutes later). I could go on, but you get the idea. Generally, the Sherry can be pricy (what in NYC isn't), but treat yourself, you'll feel like royalty.
