On a quiet neighborhood street near the galleries of Chelsea and the nightlife of the Meatpacking District, this country-inn-style brownstone is a great budget option if you don't need a lot of services or amenities. The majority of the petite rooms share a toilet, but have their own sink and shower in the room. There are small bedrooms with reach-in closets, no phones, and small TVs. However, meticulous attention to cleanliness, lovely period detailing such as decorative wainscoting, and truly helpful staff make a visit here worthwhile. A few doors past the main building are "suites," really small apartments with kitchens and kitchenettes. At $195, these are a great option if you're planning an extended stay or want to take advantage of the gourmet wares at nearby Chelsea Market. Pros: on a gorgeous Chelsea block; great bang for the buck; good subway proximity. Cons: not romantic; shared bathrooms not right for everyone.
