Blockhouse #1

  • Address: South of entrance at Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Blvd. and Central Park N, Central Park, New York, NY | Map It

Fodor's Review:

The oldest building in the park, the Blockhouse was one of three constructed hastily in September of 1814 as a fortification against the British invasion of New York City. The builders were volunteers and worked quickly, as is evident in the unevenness of the stone facade. Only a shell of the blockhouse remains; the interior is not open to visitors. Getting to the blockhouse requires taking winding paths through a heavily wooded area and should not be attempted alone.

  • Subway: Subway: B, C to Cathedral Pkwy./110th St.
