Serious bibliophiles flock to this monstrous book emporium with some 2 million volumes (the store's slogan is "18 Miles of Books"). The stock includes both new and secondhand books plus thousands of collector's items. A separate rare-book room is on the third floor at 826 Broadway (accessible through the main store). A second store is near South Street Seaport. Check out the basement, with discounted, barely touched reviewers' copies of new books, organized by author. Don't be too goal oriented or you might end up frustrated. The beauty of the Strand is that you'll never quite leave with what you came for, and treasures will essentially find you.
