In 2008 the Museum of Arts & Design moves to its new digs at 2 Columbus Circle, and more than triples its exhibition space to 54,000 square feet. The more spacious surroundings will enable the museum to present its permanent collection of art objects, including ceramics, fiber, glass, metal, paper, wood, mixed media, and design for the first time since its opening in 1956. The museum will also increase its gallery space for the display of special exhibitions. The new facility will have an entire floor dedicated to the Center for the Study of Arts & Design, and will present workshops for schoolchildren, families, adults, and senior citizens. The public will have the opportunity to see artists at work and learn about different creative processes and techniques firsthand through Master Classes, Artists in Residence, and Open Studio programs. MAD will continue to showcase decorative arts in many mediums.
