Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts is the city's musical nerve center, especially when it comes to classical music. Formal and U-shape, the massive Avery Fisher Hall presents the world's great musicians, and is home to the New York Philharmonic (212/875-5656. newyorkphilharmonic.org), one of the finest symphony orchestras. Lorin Maazel conducts from late September to early June. Bargain-price weeknight "rush hour" performances at 6:45 PM and Saturday matinee concerts at 2 PM are occasionally offered; orchestra rehearsals at 9:45 AM are open to the public on selected weekday mornings (usually Wednesday or Thursday) for $15. The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center (212/875-5788. www.chambermusicsociety.org) performs in Alice Tully Hall, which is considered to be as acoustically perfect as a concert hall can get. In August Lincoln Center's longest-running classical series, the Mostly Mozart Festival (212/875-5399), captures the crowds.
