Edith Wharton stayed at this unassuming hotel back when it was a beaux arts glamour palace. Now students, international travelers, and conventioneers grab the unimpressive rooms' impressively low rates. Tilt your head back when you enter the lobby and the chandeliers, marble columns, and ornate moldings will give you an idea of the grandeur that was once here. Now, however, rooms are tiny and the furnishings old. The location, however, is still one of the best in New York.

Midtown budget palace

The Wolcott's lobby is like a 19th century French palace! A gathering place to relax, meet other guests, and enjoy a small free buffet breakfast...and just yards from Herald Aquare and Fifth Avenue.
A Far cry from the usual NYC cookie cutter hotels.

Vacation ruined by bedbugs at the Wolcott Hotel
Posted by Denise from Fort Wayne, Indiana on 10/17/06
My daughter and I traveled to NYC to be in the audience at The Martha Stewart Show and to attend her 15th Anniversary Event at Pier 94, and also to do some shopping! We booked our 4 night stay at the Wolcott Hotel but only slept there 1 night after discovering bedbugs in our beds! We quickly checked out, placed our luggage in the lockers in the hotel, went to The Martha Stewart Show and then came back to speak with the reservation manager, who hadn't arrived before we left for the show. She told us that when the maid, after being told of our discovery, entered the room there were bugs everywhere...on the bed, crawling up the walls, on the floor, and even the ceiling! We were so grossed out! After we received our refund and was promised not to receive a penalty for early check-out, we left the hotel toting out luggage behind us in search of a new hotel. When we each returned to our homes we began searching the internet for everything written on bedbugs, their bites, infestations, etc. Nothing could have prepared us for the outbreak of bedbug bites that we woke up with a week later. It can take up to 9-14 days for these horrible, red, itchy welts to appear after being bitten! We aren't the only ones who stayed at the Wolcott Hotel to have been bitten by bedbugs. I hope you won't be the next victim!
