A luxurious retreat with stellar views of Central Park, the former St. Moritz hotel is easily one of the top properties in the city. No request is too difficult for the superlative Ritz staff, one reason the hotel is a favorite of celebrities and royalty. Even the regular rooms are the size of a small New York apartment, boasting a marble bath and shower, Wi-Fi, flat-screens, Frédéric Fekkai amenities, and 400-thread count linens. Chef Laurent Tourondel opened a BLT Market here in late 2007, featuring a seasonal menu that changes monthly. For getting around town in style, Bentley car service is available upon request. The club level features six food servings a day, including a champagne-and-caviar reception overlooking the park from the second floor. Pros: great concierge; personalized service; stellar location; views. Cons: pricey; limited common areas.

My husband and I celebrated our 28th wedding anniversary by staying the weekend at the Ritz and while the suite overlooking the park was perfect and the service impeccable, as we stood in the lobby by the front doors waiting for a limo to take us to dinner, the horse manure smell from the horse&buggy carriages right across the street was a turn off. We couldn't pass the lobby without smelling the stench. The location was okay, but we would prefer to stay closer to Saks, Rockefeller Center, etc., especially at Christmas. With the crowds, it was a pain getting to Fifth Avenue shopping. We wouldn't stay there again.
