In hopes that the country air would help his sickly wife Virginia, the poet sought refuge at this tiny workman's cottage from 1846 until his death in 1849. The country air is gone, but visitors can see period furnishings, exhibits, and the spot where Poe wrote some of his most famous works. After Virginia's death in 1847 Poe sought solace in the church chimes at nearby St. John's College (now Fordham University); word has it that these haunting sounds inspired "The Bells." You may notice that the new visitor center has a winged roof, and featherlike shingles; it was inspired by "The Raven."
