It's a striking impression: Colorful Romanesque Revival arches outside, playful floor patterning in the lobby, and an art-deco café. Rooms, then, come as a surprise; they are surprisingly conservative, with patterned bedspreads and curtains and traditional wooden headboards (an odd juxtaposition with the modern-art prints on the walls). The renovations simply haven't caught up to standard rooms. An exception are the executive rooms, which raise the bar considerably with chandeliers, new cream-colored carpets, and leather chairs. All rooms are remarkably spacious, and offer kitchenettes with microwave, mini-refrigerator, and coffeemakers. A helpful desk staff and location convenient to theaters make this a great affordable choice. Pros: good rates available; renovated rooms are good value. Cons: can be noisy with street noise; narrow hallways.
