This cramped, 24-hour neighborhood diner is quintessential divey New York, decorated with photographs of the celebrities who've visited, but the primary draw is the burgers, which are huge and juicy. It's a neighborhood institution and the seemingly endless menu has just about anything you might be craving, including every conceivable burger topping, from avocado and bacon to Greek tzatziki sauce. The classic Bistro Burger has mushrooms, Swiss, and fried onions on toasted challah bread.

When you see the menu at Big Nick's, you will be overwhelmed with choices. But from my experiences in eating there and ordering take-out, your best bet is to stick with the burgers and pizza. They never fail to please, and one slice of the Sicilian is as big as a Volkswagon. The staff are sometimes overworked, and I would suggest sitting outside if the weather permits. Ordering to go is a tricky proposition because of the extremely cramped space,
but we were staying just around the corner, so we liked being able to stop by for a quick bite.

I feel bad about giving this restaurant a poor review, since our waiter was very nice and the rest of the staff was friendly. But I was just grossed out by the place! It smelled bad and was dark and kind of dirty looking. My husband thought the place had 'character', so I was willing to be open-minded - until my food came. I ordered gazpacho soup, and it tasted like the tomoatoes had gone bad. The pizza - which didn't arrive until after I reminded
them that I ordered it - was average. My husband was happy with his burger, though, and our kids just ordered desserts, which were fine. But really - the Upper West side is full of great restaurants. Don't waste your time and money at this place when there are so many other better choices.
