  • 1. The Stephen Talkhouse

You can hear live rock, jazz, and blues music, including many well-known acts, nearly every summer night and most off-season weekend nights at the Stephen Talkhouse. Paul McCartney, Jimmy Buffett, Billy Joel, Paul Simon, and Jon Bon Jovi have played there either spontaneously or for charities. With two bars, a small stage, and a dance floor, it's usually a laid-back scene, but the place can get packed on weekends. Open mike nights and karaoke allow everyone a share of the spotlight on designated nights. Cover charges start at around $25. Sign up for their email list for promotions and free tickets for some shows. Doors open one hour before showtime, usually around 6 or 7; arrive early for the best spot.

If you're looking for a place to relax and enjoy the views, come during the week; this place packs out, and it's shoulder to shoulder on weekends. A $5–$10 cover is charged when there’s a band. Dinner is served daily at the adjacent Casino Cafe. Get here via the ferry from Patchogue.

  • 4. Cherry's on the Bay

    Cherry Grove

Whatever you do, don't ask the bartender for an iced tea at this bayfront bar, famous for having some of the best cocktails on the island. Here, it's about drag queens, D.J.s, and some of the wildest parties, all under the famous red and white-striped big top. The crowd is predominantly gay but everyone here is welcome, as long as you're happy. Get here by ferry from Sayville.

  • 5. Corner Bar

For true local flavor, head for the Corner Bar. It's not fancy, it's not trendy, and the locals love it that way. Open when everything else has closed for the night, it's ideal for a late-night snack; the burger is known to be one of the best in town. This place also packs a good lunch crowd for un-fussy, unpretentious, and reasonably priced food.

  • 10. Minnesota's Grill & Bar

This popular restaurant and nightspot features an expansive dance floor and top DJs, two huge projection screens with 10 additional HDTVs—usually tuned to a game—and newly renovated indoor and outdoor dining. Nightly food and drink specials include Mussel Monday with all-you-can-eat mussels and a live steel-drum band, Half Price Night on Thursday, and a happy hour on Friday. • 11. Montauket

The locals will tell you that this is "a hidden gem," "a kind of a secret around here." Chances are, they would prefer to keep it a secret. They come here for one reason only—to watch the sun lower in the sky, lighting up the bluffs surrounding beautiful Fort Pond. You'll meet nice people at the outdoor daiquiri bar, and even sometimes see kids running around the bar or playing horseshoes. If you want to have a meal with your sunset, a variety of options includes jerk chicken wings, salads, wraps, seafood, and lobster entrees.

  • 12. Murf's Back Street Tavern

This is the locals' beloved neighborhood dive bar, tucked away behind Main Street in a small 1790s saltbox home that was built entirely out of recycled whaling ships back when resources were tight. Crowds pack in for cheap-ish beer, darts, and ring toss, and pizza if they get hungry.

64 Division St., Sag Harbor, New York, 11963, USA
    631-725–8355
  • 13. Nolan's Pub

If you're looking for a chic beachy bar with a hipster young crowd, this is definitely not the place for you. This is your friendly neighborhood watering hole with a game on the TV, a jukebox in the corner, a pool table, and bocce ball out back (with tournaments). The beer isn't fancy and there are no "signature cocktails," but if you hit it at the right time, you might get complimentary hot dogs fresh off the grill or free pizza. Bring cash—that's all they accept here.

  • 15. Sloppy Tuna

With drink specials and fun events throughout the week—like carnivals and parties with lawn games and goldfish races—and an occasionally raucous post-college crowd, this place has been compared with the Jersey Shore. With its beachfront location and ocean views, it's got a laid-back beach-party vibe and frequently has live bands. The food (lunch and dinner) gets high marks.

  • 16. Southampton Social Club

This is the place to come to if you want to be part of the Hamptons "scene." Although dinner is served here, the party doesn't really get started until 11 pm, with live music or DJs, and goes until the wee hours Thursday through Saturday. Come early—around 10—to have a drink at the bar and a (pricey) bite to eat to avoid lines. Make sure to dress your best. Although it's mainly a summer spot, it may be open Saturday nights fall through early January, and hosts special events throughout the year.

  • 17. Speakeasy

With a loungy-chill vibe, this quaint neighborhood bar is a great place to grab a beer and bite to eat (like the popular avocado fries) with friends. The crowd is friendly if a bit loud, and the Friday night live music always good.

  • 18. Surf Lodge

On scenic Lake Montauk this place is part bar/lounge, part restaurant, part hotel, but the real draws are the young, hipster vibe and über-cool indie bands that play here. The cocktails, like Brazilian-style capirinha and ginger-mint lemonade, are pricey but delicious. Get here early, especially when a popular band is playing; the place packs out to capacity, and you could get turned away. If you want to guarantee your spot, you can reserve table service for a minumum of $1,000 for 6 people or $1,800 for a group of 8; if you stand in line, the price is considerably less (ticket prices vary per event).

  • 20. The Cortland

This tiny establishment is one of the coolest little hole-in-the-wall places you'll find in the area. Popular among the young hipster crowd, it’s the place to enjoy craft beers, creative cocktails, and infusions like hop-infused vodka. Fun events include live-music, trivia, and art nights.
