Crown Point

Crown Point

The entire area near Crown Point was once known as Ironville, though that name now belongs to a small hamlet nearby. Crown Point is a quiet town, but the rich bed of iron ore discovered here in the early 1800s once made this an industrial center. The U.S. Navy was particularly eager to use Crown Point's iron ore for its new class of ironclad ships, such as the Monitor. Today the main attraction is the Crown Point State Historic Site, a few miles north of the village. The Crown Point Bridge takes you into Vermont.
