Hiking

Anthony's Nose. A vigorous climb of about an hour leads you through an oak and hickory forest to the top of Anthony's Nose, a 900-foot mountain, for spectacular views of the Hudson Highlands and Bear Mountain across the Hudson River. The first ½ mile of the hike is part of the Appalachian Trail. Cold Spring, New York, 10516.

Clarence Fahnestock Memorial State Park. Hike past hemlock gorges and an old iron mine in Clarence Fahnestock Memorial State Park, which encompasses some more than 14,000 acres of protected land. More than 70 miles of trails, including a segment of the Appalachian Trail, wind through the wilderness here. Canopus Lake has picnic spots and a beach for swimming. Another lake and four ponds dot the landscape, with excellent bass, perch, pickerel, and trout fishing. The park office has trail maps. Admission is free, but there is a fee for parking. The park is open daily from sunrise to sunset. 1498 NY-301, Carmel, New York, 10512. 845/225–7207; parks.ny.gov.

Hudson Highlands State Park. An easy walk from the Metro-North train station at Cold Spring, this state park encompasses 5,800 acres of undeveloped land just north of town along the Hudson River. The trail to Bull Hill is the closest to the village. A moderately easy climb of about an hour through a forest offers successively grander views of Cold Spring and the river, culminating in a wide vista of the Hudson River valley at the summit. Stop for a picnic at the rocky ledge overlooking the village halfway up and watch the trains trace the shore and, in summer, sailboats, freighters, and other riverboats ply the waterway. The park is free and open daily from sunrise to sunset. Rte. 9D, Cold Spring, New York, 10512. 845/225–7207; parks.ny.gov.

Little Stony Point State Park. Two trails—one to a sandy beach, another to a small peak with panoramic views—traverse Little Stony Point State Park, a short walk from the center of Cold Spring. The park is free and open daily from sunrise to sunset. Rte. 9D, Cold Spring, New York, 10516. 845/265–7815; www.littlestonypoint.org.
