The plush resort on Star Island, in Montauk Harbor, has its own mini-replica of the Montauk Lighthouse as well as a 232-slip marina. Rooms, contemporary and bright, have floor-to-ceiling windows and private terraces. The waterfront villas contain 23 oversize rooms.

The Montauk Yacht Club offers some great deals during the shoulder seasons, especially during weekdays, but you'll need to make some special requests and bring earplugs to get a decent night's sleep. Noise travels through the guest room walls as though they were tissue paper. I'm usually a deep sleeper but I was constantly woken up by the noise of the staff and of guests in other rooms. Since guest rooms are stacked on a two-level structure, you hear the loudly creaking stairs outside your door. And if your room is near a supply closet, you'll hear that door, the staff rummaging and hauling equipment, etc. The hotel is supposedly renovating the rooms and improving the soundproofing but until that happens, be prepared! Ask for a room that's not near the equipment closets, or preferably with empty neighboring rooms.
