If You Have 3 Days

The Hamptons offer recreational opportunities galore, including hiking, horseback riding, surfing, tennis, and biking (depending on the season), but the beaches are the main attraction. Pick a base—whether it's Westhampton Beach,Southampton,East Hampton,or Montauk —from which to visit nearby villages. You can loll about on a beach, take a fishing trip, eat at top restaurants, shop at stylish boutiques, and see a few sights.

Alternatively, break up a stay on laid-back Shelter Island with a visit to Greenport. Stop at a couple of North Fork wineries and antiques stores on your way to or from Shelter Island.

If You Have 5 Days

You can easily combine tastes of the North and South forks by staying in Westhampton Beach,Sag Harbor,Greenport,or Shelter Island. Let the weather dictate your schedule. Rainy and cold days are good for checking out the wineries, museums, and shops. On the hottest days, head for the beach either in the morning or in the late afternoon.
