There's something almost collegiate about the stately Otesaga—maybe it's all the brick, or perhaps it's the cupola or the neoclassical entryway. The same studied grace runs throughout the interior. But it would be hard to hit the books here, thanks to such distractions as the Leatherstocking Golf Course and fishing or canoeing on Otsego Lake. The water view from the circular back porch alone is enough to take you far from the everyday world. In the luxurious Main Dining Room ($$$$), elegant jabots frame massive windows. Dinner is prix fixe (four courses) and formal, with jackets required for men. The ever-changing menu lists contemporary dishes such as an appetizer of corn tortellini with Madeira sauce as well as classics like beef medallions in cognac-mushroom cream sauce. The kitchen prides itself on the high quality of its ingredients, including fish that comes fresh from Boston, and breads are baked on the premises. The much more relaxed Hawkeye Bar & Grill ($-$$$) spills out onto a lakeside patio. The dinner menu includes linguine topped with exceptionally fresh lobster, clams, shrimp, and scallops, as well as such casual fare as burgers and Caesar salad. Although the resort closes in winter, the grill is open throughout the year (closed Sunday and Monday and no lunch Saturday from late November to mid-April).
