Getting Here and Around
Central New York is serviced by Albany International Airport, which is just east of the region as defined in this chapter, and Syracuse Hancock International Airport, just west of the region. Greyhound and Adirondack Trailways link the region with New York City and much of the rest of the state. Shortline and Otsego Express also serve the region. Many scenic, well-maintained roads crisscross and border the region. The interstates—Interstate 90 (the New York State Thruway), Interstate 81, and Interstate 88—are the fastest way to get around central New York. The thruway parallels the Mohawk River, which flows west to east across the region. Route 5, which also parallels the Mohawk River, is an alternative. Route 20 is a more southerly east-west option.
