The main route from Santa Fe to Taos is NM 68, also known as the Low Road, which winds between the Rio Grande and red-rock cliffs before rising to a spectacular view of the plain and river gorge. You can also take the wooded High Road to Taos. From points north of Taos, take NM 522; from points east or west, take U.S. 64.
Major hotels have ample parking. Metered parking areas are all over town; in peak seasons -- summer and winter -- traffic and parking can be a headache. There's a metered parking lot between Taos Plaza and Bent Street and a free lot on Kit Carson, two blocks east of Paseo del Pueblo.
