Taos is small and resolutely rustic, and the central area is highly walkable. Sociable Taoseños make the town a welcoming place to explore. You need a car to reach the Rio Grande Gorge and other places of interest beyond Taos proper. Traffic can be heavy in the peak summer and winter seasons (an accident on the main route through town, Paseo del Pueblo, can back up traffic for miles); ask locals about back roads that let you avoid the busy street.
The Museum Association of Taos includes six properties. Among them are the Harwood Museum, Taos Art Museum at the Fechin House, the Millicent Rogers Museum, and buildings in the Kit Carson Historic Museum consortium that include the Blumenschein Home and Museum, the Kit Carson Home and Museum, and La Hacienda de los Martínez. Each of the museums charges $5-$7 for admission, but you can opt for a combination ticket -- $20 for all five, valid for one year.
