Pricey but classy (although the resort has lowered its rates a bit in recent years), El Monte Sagrado is an eco-sensitive New Age haven offering all manner of amenities, from alternative therapies like milk-and-honey body wraps to cooking and wine classes. A short drive away, the property has an expansive ranch property that's available for you to explore on horseback or on foot. Suites and casitas are accented with exotic themes, ranging from Native American designs to foreign flourishes from faraway lands including Japan or Tibet. A popular outdoor area dubbed the Sacred Circle is a patch of grassy land encircled by cottonwoods. The on-site restaurant, De la Tierra, serves daring cuisine.

Beautiful hotel and fabulous grounds if you have time to enjoy them on your trip. The hotel is in seperate buildings so you will be walking outside to get to the restaurant or lobby. The only amenity I had time to use was the exercise room and that was better than average but not expansive. We did not try the restaurantexceptfor room service which was very good. This was my first trip to Toas so I have no comparison - bottom line it is great but more expensive than I'd like. The staff were polite but did not go out of their way.

While the concept and design are stunning, the execution leaves quite a bit to be desired. The staff was sweet and smiling, but had little idea of how to run a resort of this caliber. For the money, I sure expected better service. Word of warning- the 'package'I had reserved to ensure a flawless trip free from figuring out 'what to do', was completely unfulfilled. I was informed only after arriving and going to the spa to work out details, and then told I'd been given a room upgrade. The spa director threw in a free dinner when she saw I was not happy, but the bad taste in my mouth lasted way longer than the mediocre dinner. Save your money. Taos is amazing and doesn't need the coorporate sheen to make it enjoyable, really.
