Fodor's Review

The Anderson Museum of Contemporary Art, which started as a personal collection evolving from founder Don Anderson's patronage of artists, since the 1960s has become an important showcase of contemporary art. This 17,000-square-foot, salon-style museum exhibits sculpture, painting, print, and textiles, and it continues to evolve according to the refined-but-eclectic whims of Anderson, who at 90-plus years of age remains very active in museum operations. Among the 300-odd pieces is an impressive collection of the dramatic, large-scale fiberglass sculptures by recently deceased El Paso artist Luis Jiménez—they're oddly at home with the golf-bag "sharks" by Robbie Barber hung from the ceiling. The remarkable and competitive Roswell Artist-in-Residence program, whose participants' work feeds the ongoing collection, is operated by the museum's foundation and provides a home, studio, supplies and a stipend to five artists at a time over one year.
