Sports and the Outdoors

Ski Apache. Run by the Mescalero Apaches on 12,003-foot Sierra Blanca, Ski Apache has powder skiing for all skill levels on 55 trails and 750 acres. One of Ski Apache's distinctions is its high mountain elevation surrounded by desert. This unique climate can produce heavy snowfall (averaging more than 15 feet each winter) followed by days of pleasant, sunny weather. With the largest lift capacity in New Mexico, this huge resort can transport more than 16,500 people hourly. Ski Apache also has the state's only gondola. The season typically runs from Thanksgiving through Easter, and the snowmaking system is able to cover a third of the trails. Lift operations are open daily from 8:45 to 4; the ski area charges adults $54 for full-day lift tickets. Slightly higher fees apply for certain dates, including the week between December 26 and January 1, and special weekends in January and February. Snowboarding is allowed on all trails. Families should check out the Kiddie Korral Program for children ages four to six. Although there are no overnight accommodations at the resort, day lodges have two cafeterias, three snack bars, and outdoor grills.
