Inn of the Turquoise Bear Review

In the 1920s, poet Witter Bynner played host to an eccentric circle of artists and intellectuals, as well as some wild parties in his mid-19th-century Spanish-Pueblo Revival home, which is now a bed-and-breakfast. Rooms are simple, traditional Southwestern style with heavy wood furniture and plush linens. The inn's style preserves the building's historic integrity, starting with the ranchlike lobby and extending throughout the rambling ambience-thick public rooms. You might sleep in the room where D.H. Lawrence or Willa Cather slept, or perhaps in Robert Oppenheimer's room. The lush, terraced flower gardens provide plenty of places to repose away from the traffic on Old Santa Fe Trail, which borders the property. This is the quintessential Santa Fe inn.

    Nice rooms, great breakfast

We stayed at the Inn of the turquoise bear in August and enjoyed the Shaman room. We arrived and could not find the receptionist desk (should be better labeled). The parking could have been better labeled as well. We loved the room, except the bath was a little small. The TV did not work but was quickly fixed by staff. The soap products were very nice and the collection of native american books in the room was nice to peruse. We found the hotel to be very walkable to the plaza. Really liked the breakfast and hosts were nice.

Another great stay. We miss Cody and Colt. Pet friendly!

Another great stay at the Inn of the Turquoise Bear. We stay about once a year for the last few years. Very romantic.

Some rooms are expensive. The inexpensive ones have a shared bathroom, but are also nice. We usually stay in the mid-price rooms.

I saw reviews on this website from people who didn't like the dogs. They do have have two big dogs that are at the Inn during Wine and Cheese hour and breakfast. We love them. They are very friendly. The Inn is pet friendly if you are traveling with your cat or dog . . . very hard to find these days.

    exactly what we needed

My partner and I had just been on the road for a solid week traveling from PA to CA. We called this Inn mainly because it was the only place that allowed a pet in the room at no extra charge. Sure it was more expensive than a number of places we were looking at, but not after you factored in the $20 pet fee and the standard, generic Super 8 interiors we were used to at this point. It was $135 for their cheapest room in March, we would've paid just over $100 to stay at a dog friendly motel outside of town. We decided 'hey, it's Sante Fe let's spoil ourselves a little.'

All of our expectations we're exceeded as soon as we walked over to check in. They bumped us up to the Igor Stravinsky room (since it was a slow time for them) at no additional charge. At the check in table Steven even bent over backwards to help us find a nice, inexpensive place for dinner from this huge book of restaurants detailing each by category (it's amazingly helpful).

Once we got to our room, the light smell of a cedar wood fire greeted us - I swear we almost cried when we realized we had our own fireplace. The bathroom was quaint and romantic, complete with clawfoot tub and radiant heat floors!! The bed and sheets felt heavenly after nights with over-hard, squeaky motel mattresses and questionable linens. It was cozy, quiet and rustic, it felt like a southwestern hobbit home.

They do a cocktail hour every night in the parlor/lobby with complimentary wine and cheese. We sat with Robert, Steven and a few of the other guests and had some nice conversation while watching the sun set through the parlor window. I felt contented and relaxed before even heading off to dinner!

Overall, I can usually tell I've hit a gold mine when I've paid for a decent place to stay, but end up with a wonderful experience that seems to transcend a single night.

Great job guys!!!! We'll see you again whenever we get back to Fante Se ;)

    Home Away From Home

We have stayed at the Inn three times in the last year and are already making plans to return soon! We love the Shaman room and the O'Keeffe room is also fabulous. Wine-and-cheese hour is the best. Staying at the Turquoise Bear is memorable and the staff completely gracious. Robert, Ralph, Stephen, Greg, Michael and dogs Colt and Cody are like family.

    A Quiet Moment

I was moving across the country and stayed at the Inn for two nights. To lie in bed, listening to the early Spring winds whip around the building while watching the glow from the fireplace was exactly the moment of respite I needed in the middle of a long trip. This was my second visit to the Inn and will not be my last.

    Wonderful experience

My wife and I stayed at the Inn for our honeymoon in the Georgia O'Keefe suite and were thrilled with the accomodation. The breakfasts, evening receptions, conversation and ambience were everything we could have expected

    Wonderful Wedding location

We visited Inn of the Turquoise Bear for a wedding. The ceremony was held in the gardens around the Inn. Both the accomodations and hospitality shown by the staff were wonderful. We enjoyed the friendliness and welcoming attitude of the owners and staff. The Inn was extremely beautiful...Authentic Santa Fe! The staff was so helpful during and after the wedding. They helped make it a very memorable event for everyone. Thanks, guys!

Genuine Traditional Santa Fe - Nicely Done

My wife and I stayed at the Turquoise Inn on two occasions and I managed to get an extra stay there a few years later. Each of these visits involved different rooms and each was splendid and memorable. The restoration of both the external building, and the interior rooms has been carried out flawlessly, creating an atmosphere that is both special yet welcoming and unpretentious. The ambiance is very much traditional Santa Fe, in contrast to the faux Southwest style that characterizes so many new hotels and inns.

    like a sitcom episode

We reserved five days in the "Ansel Adams" room, but left after four. The bed was horrible, with springs working their way up to the surface and poking our ribs - the worst hotel bed I have ever had. The windows in both the bedroom and the bathroom did not open and close properly, and required us to go outside and push them shut. This became significant due to the proximity to a busy road, a neighbor at the property next door (group home?) who wailed for hours, and especially, because of the skunk(s). The skunk first visited on the 2nd night and then came back on the fourth night. The smell was so strong the second time that we woke up nauseous. The smell stayed in the room the whole next day. When we asked the management about the skunk, they said that they tend to get them this time of year. How about fixing the windows then or calling the animal control people? The door to the bathroom, the bath mirror, and the bath chandelier were all extremely short. Im 63 and estimate the doorway to have been just under 60 and in the bath mirror I could not see above my nipples. We raised the chandelier ourselves since we kept hitting our heads. The breakfast was a continental breakfast, rather than a hot one like we have had at every other B&B (between us we have stayed at about 10 different ones). There are two large dogs who are always underfoot, even in the DINING ROOM. The website and reservation materials did not mention the dogs - not cool. After the fourth night of the bed of nails, the skunk, and having to deal with the dogs, we forfeited the 5th nights fee and moved to a nice room at the Hampton Inn. Finally, we were able to sleep! On the plus side, the guests were nice, the host was friendly, and the daily wine and cheese happy hour was a good social time.
We really wanted this to be good, and its a pretty place at first glance, but I cant recommend this place on several levels; service, atmosphere, and comfort are not up to par.

Santa Fe has so much better to offer....

We have spent many magical and spiritual times in Santa Fe. Unfortunately, This wasn't one of them.
We had the unfortunate experience of staying in The Ansel Adams room. It looks like it was remodeled by a high school shop class with a $50 budget. Cheap, cheap cheap. Windows that don't open. No window treatments on any of the windows in the bathroom (that's right- anybody can see in!), a particle board bathroom vanity that sticks out 3 inches from the wall, a mirror that is hung so low you can't be over 5'2" to use it. Oh, but there's a crystal chandelier in the bathroom, Woo hoo! Oh, and don't forgot the Home Depot special gray tile in the bathroom that doesn't match the saltillo tile in the very tiny main room. There is no closet- only a roughly 20" wide portion of an armoire (half length) with knobs that don't match. Eclectic you say? And the queen size mattress must have been at least 15 years old.
Okay- so there's Breakfast (loaded with lots of carbs-not a single low carb alternative) and wine and cheese in the evening. Sounds nice, until the owners 2 huge dogs ate right off the cheese plate and curled right up on the couch. The owners made no attempt to keep the dogs from eating the cheese or getting them off the couch. Let's see, are we guests, or do we have a business relationship? Yes, we rate below their dogs.
Nope, won't be staying here again.
    Thank you very much.
