Jémez State Monument

Jémez State Monument Review

Jémez State Monument contains impressive Spanish and Native American ruins set throughout a 7-acre site and toured via an easy 1/3-mi loop trail. About 700 years ago ancestors of the people of Jémez Pueblo built several villages in and around the narrow mountain valley. One of the villages was Guisewa, or "Place of the Boiling Waters." The Spanish colonists built a mission church beside it, San José de los Jémez, which was abandoned by around 1640.
