Guadalupe District

The historic warehouse and Railyard District of Santa Fe is commonly referred to as the Guadalupe District. After the demise of the train route through town, the low-lying warehouses were converted to artists' studios and antiques shops, and bookstores, specialty shops, and restaurants have sprung up. The restored scenic train line puts the town's old Mission-style depot to use, and eventually this station will be the Santa Fe terminus of the Railrunner commuter train service that's planned from Albuquerque sometime in 2008.

In September 2008 the Railyard Park, at the corner of Cerrillos Road (sir ee ohs) and Guadalupe Street, was unveiled after a decade-long redevelopment effort. The new park, with permaculture landscaping and extensive water-catchment and irrigation systems, was designed to highlight native plants and provide citizens with a lush, urban park. The adjoining buildings to the park house the vibrant Santa Fe Farmers' Market, the teen-oriented community art center Warehouse21, SITE Santa Fe, art galleries, shops, restaurants, and live-work spaces for artists. It is the most significant development Santa Fe has seen for decades and represents the fascinating way Santa Feans have worked to meet the needs of an expanding city while paying strict attention to the city's historic relevance.
