  • 1. Andrea Kristina's Bookstore & Kafé

    $

Right Downtown, Andrea Kristina's is a rare find for Farmington: the consummate cozy bookstore-cum-Internet café (free Wi-Fi) that serves fresh, creative, and tasty—food throughout the day. Coffee is available, too, of course, or an Oregon chai latte if you prefer. The veggie breakfast burrito is special (the version with chorizo is as well); the lunch-and-dinner menu covers territory like a hot Anaïs Nin sandwich (broiled chicken with pesto, on ciabatta), a range of custom pizzas, and a flock of substantial salads, from Mediterranean spinach to avocado and bacon. The book selection is strong on Southwest titles; fiction and nonfiction options tend to smart and literary. There's live entertainment Thursday through Saturday evenings.

  • 3. Coal Street Pub

    $$ | Downtown

There are plenty of bars in this town, for sure, but this is a friendly, relaxed pub, locally owned by the Chavez family. A good selection of microbrews is backed up with pub standards like burgers, bratwurst, steaks, salads, fish, and crispy, gooey appetizers. There's live music Tuesday through Saturday evenings.

  • 4. Earl's Restaurant

    $

If you have time for only one meal in Gallup, do as most people do and head to Earl's. The home-style rib-sticking daily specials here include meat loaf and chicken-fried steak, pie, bottomless coffee, and the oversize servings you would expect. Though not in its original location, Earl's has been a family-run institution in the area since 1947. This is a classic diner, grand-scale and Southwestern style, down to the Naugahyde booths and the Western Americana objects hanging on the walls. It's a custom here for Native American jewelry vendors to go table to table displaying their wares. Simply say "No, thank you" if you're not interested and the vendor will leave.

  • 7. Hiway Grill

    $

There's a blue '50s-era car suspended high on a signpost outside; inside, the vintage-car photos, art-deco tables, red-vinyl booths, and super friendly staff give this decades-old place the feel of an old-time malt shop. Many of the American and New Mexican dishes, like the Mustang Melt (a burger with grilled onions and melted Swiss on rye with Thousand Island dressing), are named for classic cars. Only order a shake if you've really got an appetite or someone to share it with; chocolate is the local favorite.

  • 8. K.B. Dillon's

    $$$

The punched-tin ceiling and dark-wood furnishings feed the appeal of this clubby steak house. The steak-averse can make do with another house specialty, Shrimp Dillon, or a decent pasta, but really, the local grass-fed beef's the thing—and a cold one from the selection of over 30 local microbrews. There's live music on weekend nights.

    $

When just the thought of one more plate of heavy food in hot weather makes you want to cry, forestall a meltdown by coming here. The Bistro Special is a grilled portobello mushroom sandwich with mixed greens, tomato, sprouts, and a homemade Italian feta dressing. Also worthwhile is the Ultimate, a croissant with thin-sliced turkey, avocado, greens, red onion, crispy bacon, provolone, and creamy avocado dressing. Fresh pastries and desserts are available daily. And there's free Wi-Fi.

Dinner treats include crab-and-artichoke dip, garlic chicken slow-cooked in Chardonnay, and pork tenderloin with Nebbiolo and raspberry-chipotle sauce.

  • 11. The Spare Rib

  • 12. Three Rivers Eatery & Brewhouse

    $

In a 1912 onetime drugstore with a gorgeous pressed-tin ceiling, exposed air ducts, and walls lined with vintage photos, this microbrewery whips up more than 10 kinds of beer (also available to go) with names like Roustabout Stout and Chaco Nut Brown Ale. The brews go well with the enormous portions of tasty soups, salads, burgers, ribs, pizza, and other basic pub grub served here. Stroll down the block a bit to find a friendly local scene at its respectably dingy Tap Room and pool-hall outpost (some of the patina from its original incarnation as Fred Carson's Trading Post remains); occasional live music draws a diverse crowd there.

Come for homemade pies (coconut cream, cherry, and more), pork chops, burgers, and solid New Mexican. Sit at the counter, or grab a table or booth.
