When to Go to Northeastern New Mexico

In a region where the weather is nearly always sunny and dry, if fairly chilly in winter, the only months saddled with consistently harsh conditions are March and April, when "Texas blows through" and you find yourself dodging tumbleweeds, though this is more applicable to the flatter regions than the mountains. Late spring, when the wildflowers begin to bloom, into late summer is a wonderful time to visit—an occasional afternoon thunderstorm, or "monsoon," often followed by a rainbow, punctuates days that are mostly sunny. Fall brings the gold of aspens, and fishing and hiking are especially spectacular. Temperatures can remain mild through Thanksgiving, and a crisp winter with good snow is a blessing for cross-country skiers. The expansive vistas on snowy days are unforgettable. Roads are well maintained throughout the year, but be alert to storm warnings.
