Pendaries Village Review

The mood here (where the name is pronounced pan-da-ray) is budget motel meets Kit Carson, but this secluded retreat and the surrounding mountain hamlet of Rociada provide a relaxing place to enjoy some high-altitude golfing. The beautifully laid out Pendaries Golf Course (505/425-9890) lies at 7,500 feet altitude and snakes through the eastern edge of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. Overnight golf packages are available, and daily greens fees are $45 weekdays and $55 weekends (optional golf-cart rental is $15). The rooms here have perfunctory motel-room decor but are clean and comfortable; the on-site Moosehead Restaurant and Saloon (open mid-May to mid-September), with its century-old bar, is usually crowded with locals who come for the steaks and Southwestern food.
