Fodor's Review

A smaller chapel 200 yards from El Santuario was built in 1857 and dedicated to Santo Niño de Atocha. As at the more famous Santuario, the dirt at Santo Niño de Atocha's chapel is said to have healing properties in the place where the Santo Niño was first placed. The little boy saint was brought here from Mexico by Severiano Medina, who claimed Santo Niño de Atocha had healed him of rheumatism. Tales of the boy saint's losing one of his shoes as he wandered through the countryside helping those in trouble endeared him to the people of northern New Mexico. It became a tradition to place shoes at the foot of the statue as an offering. Many soldiers who survived the Bataan Death March during World War II credit Santo Niño for saving them, adding to his beloved status in this state where the percentage of young people who enlist in the military remains quite high.
