A Long Way Down
The newest discovery in Carlsbad Caverns National Park is Lechuguilla Cave, the deepest limestone cave in the United States. Scientists began mapping the cave network in 1986, and though they've located more than 112 mi of caverns extending to a depth of more than 1,600 feet, much more of this area along the park's northern border remains to be investigated. Lechuguilla is not open to the public, but an exhibit describing it can be viewed at the visitor center.
