Built in 1892 for widows of Civil War veterans, this imposing brick-and-stone building is set back from busy Pleasant Street. Much of the original woodwork has been preserved. Each room is decorated with antiques and reproduction pieces, and all have ceiling fans. The kitchen at the somewhat stodgy Franklin Pierce Dining Room ($$-$$$$; closed Sunday) turns out genuinely appealing continental fare, such as beef tenderloin with béarnaise sauce, chive flan, and garlic-mashed potatoes.
