This stately yellow structure has graced a hill overlooking the Oyster River since 1649. Rooms in the house and the 1795 barn are named after plants from the gardens and filled with Georgian- and Federal-style antiques and reproductions, canopy or four-poster beds with Edwardian drapes, and Oriental rugs; half have fireplaces. Specialties in the Maples dining room ($$-$$$) include tamarind-glazed warm duck salad, and calamari stuffed with sweet Italian sausage with tomato sauce, fried eggplant, and sweet-and-sour caponata vegetables. The comfy Ffrost Sawyer Tavern ($-$$) serves simpler fare as does the outdoor conservatory, which is open spring through fall.
