In the mid-19th century, wealthy Bostonians retreated to imposing country homes in summer months. Many of these houses have been converted into handsome inns. The smallest have only a couple of rooms and are typically done in period style.
You'll also find a great many well-kept, often family-owned motor lodges -- particularly in the White Mountains and Lakes regions. A few of the grand old resorts still stand, with their world-class cooking staffs and tradition of top-notch service. In the Merrimack River valley, as well as along major highways, chain hotels and motels prevail.
