About 11 miles northeast of Littleton, the small village of Whitefield became a prominent summer resort in the late 19th century, when wealthy industrialists flocked to this rolling valley to play golf and hobnob with each other. The yellow clapboard Mountain View Grand Hotel, which first opened in 1865, is once again one of New England's grandest resorts. It's worth driving through the courtly Colonial center of town and up Route 116 just beyond to see this magnificent structure atop a bluff overlooking the Presidentials.
