Old Man of the Mountain
Old Man of the Mountain Review
This naturally formed profile in the rock high above Franconia Notch, a famous New Hampshire geological site, crumbled unexpectedly on May 3, 2003, from the strains of natural erosion. The iconic image had defined New Hampshire, and the Old Man's "death" stunned and saddened residents. You can still stop at the posted turnouts from Interstate 93 north- or southbound. In Franconia Notch State Park on the northbound side of the highway there is a pull-off; on the southbound side take Exit 34B and follow the signs. Another option is to go along the shore of Profile Lake for the best views of the mountain face. There's a small, free Old Man of the Mountain Museum administered by Franconia Notch State Park at the southbound viewing area (by the Cannon Mountain Tram parking area) open daily 9-5.
