This somber face in the rock high above Franconia Notch crumbled somewhat unexpectedly in 2003. The iconic image had defined New Hampshire, and the Old Man's "death" stunned and saddened residents. You can see photographs and learn about the history of the Old Man at the visitor center at Flume Gorge. Better yet, follow signs to a small Old Man of the Mountain Park. There you can view the iconic mountain face through newly installed steel rods that seem to literally put
the beloved face back on the mountain.
