In 1858 Sylvester Marsh petitioned the state legislature for permission to build a steam railway up Mt. Washington. A politico retorted that he'd have better luck building a railroad to the moon. Just 11 years later, the Mt. Washington Cog Railway chugged its way along a 3-mi track up the west side of the mountain to the summit, and it is today one of the state's most beloved attractions—a thrill in either direction. In winter the train goes 4,100 feet up, an hour-long roundtrip ($31) with trains departing at 10 AM and 1 PM. The rest of the year the full trip ($59) is three hours, with 20 minutes at the summit; trains depart at 11 AM and 2 PM.
