The White Mountains Sights

Lancaster Review

About 8 miles north of Whitefield, the affable seat of Coos County sits among the serrated peaks at the confluence of the Connecticut and Israel rivers. Before becoming prosperous through commerce, Lancaster was an agricultural stronghold; at one time the only acceptable currency here was the bushel of wheat. It has restored much of its main street, which now has a dapper mix of Victorian homes, prim churches, and funky artists' studios and antiques shops.
